Another step forward in the expansion of Sicilian railway infrastructure: the new Bicocca–Catenanuova section, 38 km of double track built with a total investment of over €600 million, is operational as of today, November 2nd.
The inauguration was celebrated on October 29th with an inaugural journey from Catania Fontanarossa station, marking the first time the new section of line was traveled. This symbolic moment was attended by key figures from the FS Group, along with various institutional representatives, and marks an important milestone in the modernization of the entire Sicilian railway network.
From today, with the resumption of commercial connections between Catania and Palermo, the direct service between the two cities is once again operational, with a travel time of approximately 2 hours and 57 minutes and a guaranteed connection to the Catania Airport stop.
This strategic project is part of the new Palermo-Catania-Messina route, one of the main railway axes in Southern Italy, designed to improve connectivity on the island and significantly reduce travel times.
Techproject was pleased to contribute to this project, acting as the representative of the RTP di Progettisti (Contracting Authority for Project Managers), overseeing the executive design of the new section, an integral part of Lot 6, working in close collaboration with Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and Italferr.
The new line includes 17 viaducts, 2 cut-and-cover tunnels, 8 overpasses, and 5 road underpasses, eliminating existing level crossings for greater safety and the flow of local traffic. All of this was achieved using the most advanced technologies for rail traffic control and management, enhancing safety, punctuality, and service reliability.
This is a project of great importance for sustainable mobility and the infrastructure development of Sicily, to which Techproject is proud to have contributed with its expertise and professionalism.
