Construction of the New Pilot Tower at the Port of Genoa
In January 2021, following the award of the contract, work began on one of the most prestigious and ambitious projects undertaken by the Techproject team in its 20 years of activity. The project concerned the construction of the “New Pilot Tower”, the operational headquarters of the Genoa Harbour Pilots, including the design and sizing of the offshore structures intended to protect the new facility, together with all associated enabling works (Construction Value: €19.6 million).
The project became necessary following the tragic collapse of the former Pilot Tower in 2013, caused by the impact of a container ship, which resulted in the loss of 13 lives. Based on the concept design donated by renowned architect Renzo Piano, the Techproject team developed the final and detailed design, as well as all preliminary activities, including surveys and geotechnical investigations both onshore and offshore.
The project includes a control tower, a multi-storey building known as the “Service Building”, a single-storey technical block, three port quays, and a bridge providing direct access. The entire project was developed using BIM methodology (Level of Development LOD D), in accordance with the contractual documentation and specifically with the pGI – Information Management Plan, prepared by BIM Manager Eng. Giancarlo Tanzi.
In addition to the BIM Manager, the project involved a BIM Coordinator and BIM Specialists covering architecture, structures, MEP systems and infrastructure. The main BIM software used included Autodesk Revit 2022, for the modelling of all project works, and Autodesk Navisworks 2022, for multidisciplinary coordination and clash detection. Information exchange within the design team was managed through the Autodesk BIM 360 cloud platform.
